More than your imagination will take flight at Mary Poppins, Broadway’s high-flying super hit musical. Like no other show on Broadway, Mary Poppins magically takes you back to a time and place you wish you’d never left behind – and just wait until you see her fly! Mary Poppins is everything you’d hope for in a Broadway musical and unlike anything you’d ever expect.
Mary Poppins, a co-production by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, began performances on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre (Broadway at West 42nd Street) in New York City. The Broadway production officially opened on Thursday, November 16, 2006.
Based on P.L. Travers’s cherished stories and the classic 1964 Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins features the Academy Award®-winning music and lyrics of Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Mary Poppins features such beloved songs as “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Step In Time,” “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed The Birds,” “Let’s Go Fly A Kite,” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” along with new songs such as “Practically Perfect” and “Anything Can Happen.”
It took Walt Disney twenty years to make the film of Mary Poppins, from the time he first tried to secure the film rights to its triumphant premiere in 1964. The film was an immediate and phenomenal success, earning universal acclaim. The film played to an estimated 200 million people when it was released and has remained one of Disney’s most enduring and best-loved films.
The first Disney theatrical production of Mary Poppins enjoyed a record-breaking run at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End, where it opened in December 2004. The London production officially closed on January 12, 2008. You can read a review of the London production here.
The stage production was created, in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh, by Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, who wrote the book, and the Olivier Award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who composed new songs and additional music and lyrics.
Ashley Brown, who made her Broadway debut as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, plays Mary Poppins on Broadway. Olivier Award nominee Gavin Lee (who was originally in the London production) plays Bert.
