2016 Special/Themed Cruises

Disney Vacation Club Cruises

The special Disney Vacation Club (DVC) member cruise for 2016 is a 4-night cruise on the Disney Magic on September 28, 2016, sailing from New York City, visiting Halifax, Nova Scotia and returning to New York. This cruise is only open to Disney Vacation Club members who have purchased at least some of their vacation points directly from Disney (rather than from another member via resale). Members can use their vacation points to book the cruise or can pay cash rates. Typically DVC cruises are significantly more expensive than similar cruises for the general public, but guests will be given a wide variety of DVC special gifts and will get to experience some exclusive member events including talks by special guests including artists, imagineers and/or actors from classic Disney movies.

Whether the DVC member cruise is worth booking is a personal judgment call. The extra events are difficult or impossible to experience any other way. The various DVC gifts are usually a mix of the usual kinds of tote bags, pens, and so forth you can get by attending a DVC meeting or buying a new DVC contract, plus at least a few special and unique items. Some people love the DVC member cruise and try to go on each one. Others go once and feel it’s not worth the extra money.

You may optionally extend your trip by booking a 4-night member-exclusive Adventures By Disney tour of New York City before the cruise. This tour includes visits to many of the top sights of New York City, a behind-the-scenes tour of Good Morning America and tickets to Disney’s Tony-award-winning musical Aladdin.

Booking began on November 15th, 2015, at 9:00 ET, only via phone. In the past, DVC member cruises have often sold out quickly, so if you’re interested you should contact DVC member services bright and early on the day that booking opens.

Other Special/Themed Cruises

The complete schedule of themed cruises has not yet been announced for 2016. However, some of the themed cruises that have been offered in the past include Halloween-themed cruises for sailings in late September through the end of October, special Christmas decorations and activities from early November through the end of the year and special holiday cruises for sailings that include Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, that will often include special meals and events on the actual holiday.

Star Wars Day at Sea sailings:

Star Wars Day at Sea will take place on Disney Fantasy 7-night Western Caribbean cruises in 2016 on January 9, 23; February 6, 20; March 5, 19; April 2 and 16. This itinerary departs from Port Canaveral. This 1-day event will feature a full day of Star Wars celebrations, including a deck party, meet-and-greets with favorite characters, Star Wars-themed youth activities, unique food and beverage offerings, and special merchandise. There will also be exclusive at-sea screenings of the Star Wars films and the new Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels.

Independence Day Sailings:

On sailings that include July 4th, there is usually a special celebration with characters dressed in red, white and blue outfits. There has not been a special fireworks show in the past, but sometimes on sailings in the Caribbean or Bahamas they move pirate night to July 4th so they’ll have fireworks on Independence Day. (There is no pirate night or fireworks on sailings outside the Caribbean and Bahamas.)

The following sailings include Independence Day (July 4th, 2016):

Halloween on the High Seas Sailings:

During this period there will be special Halloween events onboard, including trick-or-treating and characters dressed in Halloween costumes.

In the past there has not been any unique event or special menu for Halloween night itself, over and above what they do on all the Halloween themed cruises during the whole period. But Disney has been adding to their Halloween events and decorations the last few years, so that may change.

New!Halloween on the High Seas takes place on the following sail dates:

Thanksgiving sailings:

The following sailings include Thanksgiving Day (November 24, 2016). In the past there has been a special menu that day, and pictures with Pilgrim Mickey and Minnie. The Christmas decorations will usually be fully up by Thanksgiving, and there will be a full set of holiday activities and events.

Christmas sailings:

The dates for Christmas-themed cruises have not yet been announced for 2016. Typically, Christmas decorations will be up from early November through the final New Years sailing, and there will be special holiday events during that whole period, including meet and greets with characters in special Christmas outfits. Some of the more elaborate Christmas decorations, including a huge, real gingerbread house, will not be up until later in November.

The following sailings include Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (Dec 24-25, 2016). In the past there have been unique special events and a special menu on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

New Years sailings:

The following sailings include New Years Eve (December 31, 2016). In the past there has been a special party with countdown and balloon drop that night.

2016 Drydock Plans

The Wonder’s is going for a long drydock from September 9 – November 9. Current thinking is that it may be undergoing large renovations similar to the reimagining of the Magic. However, Disney has not made any specific announcements yet about what’s going to happen during this dry dock.
